Geodes: Nature’s Rockin’ Designs & Patterns

/
June 21, 2019

Just as soon as Geological Pattern trends arrived  a few years ago, they proved they were here to stay in the design world. Clothing, accessories, hardware, upholstery, countertops, and lighting, to name a few of the design media where Geodes now appear, capture  our fancy with their natural and colorful beauty.

agate and geodes haute couture
Several years ago the Haute Couture designers flashed some great inspiration with their vibrant geode patterns.

geodes stones
I have always had a thing for Geodes, Crystals and Precious Stones. Every time my son, Georgie, and I visited the Discovery Zone or exhibits that were selling stones we would add one more piece to our growing collection…

gem stones and geodes
I would encourage anyone to bring the look and feel of these gorgeous stones, or their patterns,  into their living space. They offer a tranquil and timeless element to any room. PHOTO: Christopher Oquendo
VITA JUWEL WATER BOTTLE WITH CRYSTALS
One of these water bottles containing geodes always sits on my desk. The water tastes cleaner and refreshing! Geodes can bring you healing and revitalize you. A little research will tell you all you need to know about any stone that catches your attention. Emerald is a stone of wisdom, wealth, and is often used to bring love into one’s life. Emerald has been a popular stone among royalty for centuries. Rose Quartz is especially nice for all things romantic. Tigers Eye can keep you calm and is great to have in the office for growing wealth!

Geodes (Greek γεώδης – ge-ō-dēs, “earthlike”) are geological secondary structures that occur in certain sedimentary and volcanic rocks. They are of sedimentary origin formed by chemical precipitation. Geodes are essentially hollow, somewhat sphere-like masses of mineral matter (Wikipedia).

gem collection
Personally, I love this bowl of gem stones in my living room; it is a live edge wooden carving holding my favorite gems.

geodes stones
I recall all the beautiful colors and shapes Georgie and I would find on our travels. We started his collection of semi-precious stones when he was quite small. Today it is a beautiful group of earthy, colorful and meaningful memories from growing up. It is amazing to think that these mesmerizing stones are born from the guts of the earth.

holding crystals
For those who don’t know me, my Georgie was born blind, so his toys and things to occupy him as a little boy were very different than other kids’ stuff… Georgie couldn’t see the stones, but he could FEEL their beautiful energy, so he loved holding each and every one of them for hours on end.

Imagine my excitement as a designer with so many decorative options of geodes and all the applications in the world of design today!  Besides all of geodes’ amazing healing properties, what blows me away are the amazing natural patterns. Patterns that have inspired art and design media all over the world.

malachite chairs
For instance, I have a crush on these Malachite chairs designed by Carlyn and Co. Malachite is one of my favorite geode stones.

malachite turtle
As a stone Malachite is an extremely powerful energy amplifier, and it is  called the ‘stone of transformation’; it is used for deep energy clearing, bringing healing and positive change to whomever wears it. Isn’t this little turtle adorable? I love the malachite clusters on it.

malachite wallpaper
I also love it as a wallpaper choice as it gives an incredibly dramatic effect like in this bedroom by Erica Bonell . Malachite as a patternt makes beautiful upholstery.

abstract geodes wallpaper
When abstract, geodes make playful, energized designs like this  dramatic wallpaper we saw in the Dallas showhouse, by Pulp Design Studio.

geodes mural
Wall murals are even more fascinating. They can give a ‘WOW’ feeling even to the simplest of rooms. This wall reminds me of a beautiful  Smokey Quartz.
geodes bathroom
And if one wall is not enough, you can cover every wall of the room. This bathroom, in the words of its designer Michel Smith Boyd, is a ‘jewel box’. The walls envelop the room in an impactful way. Their design reminds me of the Cerussite quartz, a stone that enhances communication and good listening skills.

amethyst countertop
Did you know that geodes are the new favorite countertop choice for upscale kitchen designs? Check out this Amethyst countertop–ahhh it’s to die for…

amethyst cluster
Amethyst is one of my top favorite stones! I have one on my desk, as it is a purifier and has anti-stress properties. The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word Αμεθυστος (a-me-thee-stohs), which means “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend.

Agate rug
Geode patterns are a powerful presence in a room when used in a  rug.

chandelier with raw quartz
For example, I created this room for you to see the effect. It adds great interest and lots of texture to the space. Did you notice the geode chandelier? It is breathtaking!
raw quartz chandelier
Here it is! In case you missed that beauty, it is full of raw Selenite crystals!

Agate fireplace
This chandelier reminds me of one of my favorite rooms, designed by J.Wheeler Designs. Another strong geode element in the room is the fireplace–what a beautiful stone! The treatment on the ceiling is also marvelous!

AGATE HARDWARE KNOB
Geodes make great hardware knobs that you can easily make yourself. But if making your own knobs sounds a bit daunting you can find beautiful ready-made ones.

geodes wedding menu
A geode doesn’t necessarily need to be a large piece to make an impact, though, it can be a solo design as simple and artful as this wedding menu  by MarthaStewartWeddings

geodes home accessories
Or it can make a memorable special gift

ROSE QUARTZ CANDLE HOLDER
And bring a beautiful reflection as a candleholder  photo:soulmakes

Agate serving piece
And a sizable piece of Agate can be used for a serving piece or make artful coasters. Photo:VivaTerra

AGATE ART
A series of colorful geodes can make an excellent accent wall infused with natural texture and color.  art by Kim Armstrong Design Hey, did you notice the centerpiece on the console table?

geodes book ends
And it stands out in its raw form, adding texture and good vibes like these bookends.

agate drink table
Here a drink is made special; the beautiful Agate is the  ‘jewelry on the outfit’ of  this drink table.

geodes wall treatment
A collection of geodes can simply be a conversation piece like this stunning wall by KAD+LEC design

geodes wash basin
Now if you care for a showstopper, the wash basin in this powder room is out of this world! I would wash my hands again and again, only to keep looking at this gorgeous gem!

crystal geodes bath tub
And if you are ready for a drop dead experience, check out this stunning  crystal bath tub, but please don’t ask how much it costs…If you can’t buy it at least you can dream you are in it! It is one of of a kind!

Ha, ha! It is normal with all these crystals!

If you want to have fun, here is a beautiful presentation of a DIY geode-inspired resin art by Rebecca “The Frugal Resinista”. That will keep you busy playing and creating…
